Want kids to eat healthy?
Let them eat fudge!

Read Kim Seidel’s article, Serving Up Four-Season Nutrition, for the complete picture, but Caryn Willens, a naturopath quoted in the story, offers this fudge recipe. It puts a healthy spin on a fun treat, and kids love it, according to Willens.

Recipe contributed by Caryn Willens, La Crosse naturopath

Peanut Butter Fudge

  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup dried milk powder
  • 1/4 cup raw honey
  • 1 small bag chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts

Mix peanut butter and honey in a mixing bowl. Add milk powder, chocolate chips, and nuts. Refrigerate until firm. Enjoy!

(Ingredients can vary according to your taste and substitutions can be made for dairy and peanut allergies.)

Staff member Lisa Grant posed the following question to hundreds of teens (through a variety of sources):

If you could ask your parents to give you anything that was not material (i.e. a car, computer, etc.), what would you ask them for?

Below is a sampling of the responses she received. Granting holiday wishes for your teens could be easier than you think.

  • Only constructive criticism. No other kind is needed.
  • Turn that television off long enough to play a board game or something.
  • Advice and stories of what they went through when they were my age.
  • Freedom. Don't have a lot right now.
  • Some distance and space. I'm a pretty private person. I don't need them breathing down my neck all the time. Just let me be alone when I need to, okay?
  • Understanding.
  • More trust.
  • More privacy, and yet, at the same time, for them to care more about me. Time to just spend with them, like a father-daughter/mother-daughter date thing.
  • Stop getting angry at me for everything.
  • I wish I could talk to them more about what really matters to me. Tell them what I'm really feeling.
  • Show appreciation for things that I do.
  • Talk and share.
  • More patience, more understanding, more freedom, more love, less “I know everything” syndrome.
  • More discipline
